Volunteer Information
The New York Civil Rights Coalition seeks smart and self-motivated college, law, and graduate students who have the time to volunteer their services as teachers of our UNLEARNING STEREOTYPES: CIVIL RIGHTS & RACE RELATIONS course. The course is taught at public schools, mostly high schools, throughout the city.
Once a week, in each of the schools, our volunteers co-teach (two volunteers per class) the semester-long course to students in regularly scheduled classes. Including preparation, travel and teaching time, the weekly commitment will be approximately 2 to 3 hours. Volunteers use Socratic and "open discussion" techniques to engage students in lively, provocative discussions that examine attitudes about race relations and various kinds of discrimination and prejudices, including xenophobia, homophobia, anti-Semitism, and gender stereotypes. The course encourages critical thinking and dialogue, with the goal of improving intergroup relations.
Classes will begin in early October; volunteers must attend one orientation/training session in either August or September to qualify for placement in a school. Call Joel, at (212) 563-5636, or e-mail the NYCRC at jjohnson@nycivilrights.org.
